Dolores Fernandes Obituary – A Life Dedicated to Service

With heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss, we share the passing of Dolores (De Jesus) Fernandes at the age of 85 on Thursday, November 30, 2023. Born on the picturesque island of Madeira to Manuel and Carmina on February 1, 1938, Dolores was the youngest of five spirited sisters, always exuding infectious energy.

A Journey of Love and Adventure

Dolores’s life took a significant turn when she met her husband in Brazil, and together they embarked on a shared adventure, owning a business and building a life together. In 1963, they made the life-altering decision to migrate permanently to the United States, joining her sister and parents. The couple settled in Newark, where they worked tirelessly to establish a home on Ferry Street. Dolores devoted herself to raising their son, Tony, and creating a warm and welcoming space for family and friends until her husband’s passing in 1990.

A Seamstress with a Passion

A skilled seamstress, Dolores spent her early years working in the trade and continued to embrace her passion even after retirement. Her love for sewing was complemented by her active participation in the Independence Park Seniors, where she formed a deep bond with her dear friend Lillian. Trips to Atlantic City and membership in the Centro Madeirenso were among her cherished activities, reflecting her love for music, singing, and connecting with her community.

A Life of Dedication and Love

Dolores’s life was a testament to dedication and love—she was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a pillar of support for her extended family and those around her. An animal lover, her kindness extended beyond human connections.

She is survived by her loving son Antonio (Tony) Da Silva and his wife Marisol, and she joins her late husband Antonio Fernandes. Dolores is remembered as the cherished sister of Alzira Massa, Maria Jose Andrade, Noemi Fernandes, and Manuela Fernandes, and she leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.
